The Utah Hockey Club's first NHL draft pick comes with a big-time resume.
On Friday night, UHC selected Canadian forward Tizi Iginla with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 draft. If the last name sounds familiar, it's because Iginla's father, Jarome, played 22 years in the NHL and is now a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Jarome Iginla was drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in 1995 and was subsequently traded to the Calgary Flames, where he made his NHL debut in 1996.
Iginla played for the Flames until he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013. He then moved around the NHL, playing for the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings before retiring in 2018.
Jarome Iginla finished his career as a six-time All-Star and is one of just seven players in NHL history to score 30 or more goals in 11 consecutive seasons.
In the international game, Iginla has ties to Utah, having led Canada to its first hockey gold medal in 50 years at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (he won two gold medals total during his career).
In 2020, Iginla was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Despite his father's accomplishments, Tizi Iginla surpassed his father's record immediately after being selected on Friday, being selected with the sixth overall pick, five spots higher than his father was 29 years ago.
The Iginlas brothers became just the sixth father-son duo ever to be selected within the first 15 picks of the NHL Draft.
