AUBURN — Auburn University football has taken a hit in its 2025 freshman recruiting class.
Four-star linebacker Tyler Lockhart, rated No. 147 in the nation by the 247Sports Composite, withdrew his commitment to the Tigers on Friday. His withdrawal came two days after four-star offensive tackle Carde Smith did the same.
Lockhart and Smith were set to enroll at Auburn University in May and April, respectively.
According to 247Sports' team rankings, the Tigers currently have 14 players committed to 2025, which ranks 12th in the country, and seventh in the SEC behind Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Tennessee and LSU.
With more than five months still until the early signing period, there's still time for the Tigers to target a top-five class, something head coach Hugh Freeze has said he wants to achieve.
Other players ranked in the top 200 who have still committed to Auburn include safety Eric Winters (65th), edge defender Ja'Kaleb Faulk (108th), running back Alvin Henderson (113th), defensive linemen Jordan Crawford (162nd) and Malik Autry (180th), cornerback Devin Williams (192nd) and offensive linemen Broderick Shull (193rd) and Tavaris Dice (197th).
analysis:Auburn's defensive line could be deep in 2024 with a replacement star player.
Hoops:Denver Jones is still learning how to be a 'quarterback' as a point guard
