In the end, 16 people will compete and only five will become Olympians. Welcome to the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials.
The star of the show is, of course, the greatest gymnast of all time, Simone Biles, who will be competing in her third Olympic Games, but because of the intensity of the competition, she's not the one to watch.
Jones is all but guaranteed to compete despite missing the U.S. Championships earlier this month to treat a lingering shoulder injury. Jones has multiple medals under her belt, including a silver medal in the individual all-around in 2022 and a bronze medal in 2023.
However, 19-year-old Skye Blakely, who had a spectacular performance at the U.S. Championships, will not be competing in the tournament because she injured her Achilles tendon in practice and will not be able to compete in the Olympics.
The heartbreak has significantly altered the competition in Minneapolis, with several members of the Tokyo team competing in their second Olympics, including Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles and 2021 alternate Kayla DiCello.
The trials will be one of the committee's toughest team-building decisions: the reigning Olympic floor exercise champion or the Pan American Games champion who led the U.S. to a gold medal at the world championships? The answer will come down to who makes the cut during the two-day trials. For the gymnasts gathering at the Target Center in Minneapolis, it's make-or-break time.
