LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games announced changes to its venue plans Friday that it says will save an estimated $156 million and increase revenue.
Swimming will take place in a temporary pool at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, which will seat 38,000 and be the largest swimming venue in Olympic history. Basketball will take place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, which opens this August. Gymnastics will take place at Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles. Track and field will continue to take place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The Los Angeles Olympic Games will be the city's third time hosting the Games and will take place from July 14 to 30, 2028. Over 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries will compete in 35 sports currently scheduled.
Plans for the opening and closing ceremonies will remain unchanged, with some to be held at both the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium. As a result, the traditional schedules for track and field and swimming will be adjusted: track and field will take place in the first week of the Games and swimming in the second week.
At the time of the opening ceremony, the temporary competition and warm-up pools will already be built and covered, and the temporary stands will be erected later, while the athletes train for the start of the swimming competition.
“World Aquatics is confident that any impact will be minimal given the fantastic opportunity presented to showcase our sport,” the federation said in a statement.
The swimming events were originally scheduled to take place at a baseball field on the University of Southern California campus, which is undergoing major renovations to its athletic facilities.
“We realized that putting in a temporary pool wasn't going to work, so we started looking at other locations and came up with a fun idea to see if we could do it at SoFi,” LA28 President Casey Wasserman said on a conference call.
USA Swimming is currently holding trials for the Paris Games at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, home of the NFL's Colts, and Wasserman isn't worried about filling the stands at SoFi, home of the NFL's Rams and Chargers.
“If we could sell more pool-view seats, we would definitely sell them,” he said. “We're confident this swim meet will be truly historic.”
The marathon athletics events will run until the final weekend, with the medals being awarded at the closing ceremony.
“We are pleased to support this forward-thinking schedule change for LA28,” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in a statement. “This change underscores our commitment to innovation in athletics and raising the global profile of our athletes.”
The softball and canoe slalom events will be held in Oklahoma City, where the medal ceremonies will also be held, and Wasserman said athletes from those sports will have the opportunity to attend the opening and closing ceremonies in Los Angeles.
According to LA28, the largest softball venue in Southern California has a capacity of less than 2,000 people and the attendance is expected to be significant, so the game will be played at Devon Park (13,000 capacity), which annually hosts the Women's College World Series.
Because there are no canoe slalom venues in the western United States, Riverport, Oklahoma City, where this year's Olympic trials were held, will be the host city in 2028.
Relocating the competition venues will help LA28 align with the International Olympic Committee's sustainability-focused policy, which avoids building temporary venues and encourages the use of existing venues outside the host city.
According to LA28, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in the San Fernando Valley will host BMX freestyle and BMX racing, as well as a skateboard park, street competitions and archery.
Diving events will take place in the same pool that hosted the 1932 Olympic swimming events at Exposition Park in South Downtown Los Angeles. Long Beach also hosts artistic and para-swimming events, as well as marathon swimming and water polo.
Equestrian and para-equestrian events will move from Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area to an existing facility in Temecula, an hour and a half from Los Angeles, that is large enough to host all events in one location.
Shooting and parasports competitions will also be moved from the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area to one of two sport shooting clubs to be determined outside Los Angeles.
LA28 estimates that each venue relocation will have an economic impact of at least $10 million by reducing the cost and complexity of building, overlaying and operating temporary stadiums.
The organizing committee has submitted updated venue allocations to the City of Los Angeles, which must approve any sports that move outside the city limits from the original venue plans.
The previous venue plans were drawn up in 2017 during the city's bidding process. Since then, several new stadiums and arenas have become available.
