The San Jose Sharks are climbing the ranks!
The Sharks traded their 14th and 42nd picks in the 2024 draft, which they acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Erik Karlsson over the summer, to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for the 11th pick.
This gives the San Jose Sharks a good chance of landing one of the top defensemen in the draft, perhaps Carter Yachemczuk, Zane Parekh or someone else. Forwards Konsta Helenius, Barkley Catton, Beckett Senneke, Cole Yzerman or someone else could also be in the running.
GM Mike Grier paid a fair amount for the promotion based on recent performance, but it seemed like it was a better deal than he expected Monday.
“It's always difficult to move up the rankings, but we're open to both options,” he said. “If the price isn't too high, we'll consider moving up. We'll also consider trading back and getting more assets if it makes sense. At No. 14, we're pretty open-minded.”

The No. 11 has been moved three times in the capped era.
- In 2022, the San Jose Sharks traded their 11th pick to the Arizona Coyotes for the 27th, 34th and 45th picks.
- In 2019, the Coyotes traded No. 11 to the Philadelphia Flyers for No. 14 and No. 45.
- In 2016, the Ottawa Senators traded his No. 11 to the New Jersey Devils for No. 12 and No. 80.
This is in line with 2019 transactions.

According to Dom Ruszczyszyn's draft pick value chart, this gives the Sabres (7.1) a clear win over the Sharks (5.7), giving the Sabres a GSVA of +1.4. However, Puckpedia's new Perry Pick Value Calculator, created by former Arizona Coyotes director of hockey analytics Matt Perry, has Buffalo (33.23) coming in just ahead of San Jose (31.99).
Grier has had a very busy draft week so far. We'll see what he has in store for us on Friday. On Tuesday, he took on Jake Wollman's contract and received an additional second-round pick from the Detroit Red Wings in return for his hard work. With picks 11, 33 and 53 in hand, can he move up even further?
