Garrett Riley transferred a year ago to revitalize Clemson's offense, which only ranked 50th in the nation in yards per game. Cade Klubnick returns at quarterback and Phil Muffa replaces Will Shipley as RB1, but the Tigers are still looking for a game-changing player at wide receiver. Freshman Bryant Wesco might fit the bill. The lack of a downfield threat was a major reason Clemson missed the College Football Playoff for the third straight year.
While the loss of star and SEC rushing champion Cody Schrader is a blow, the Tigers still return a dynamic core on offense, with Brady Cook, who threw for 3,317 yards last fall, returning along with a nearly full rotation of impressive receivers that includes Luther Burden and Theo Wease.
Pat Shurmur takes over as offensive coordinator, giving the Buffaloes a more pro-minded approach this season. Shouder Sanders was in top form last year, passing for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns while allowing 56 sacks and playing behind the worst line in the Power Five. Two-way player Travis Hunter returns after finishing second on the team with 721 yards and five touchdowns last season.
The Hurricanes have garnered a lot of attention in the preseason with transfer acquisitions including two-way quarterback Cam Ward and tailback Damien Martinez. Ward has 13,874 career yards and 119 touchdowns, while Martinez has over six yards per touch and 16 touchdowns over the past two years. They pair well with an athletic receiver corps and lead what is expected to be a strong, cohesive defensive unit in a more competitive ACC.
Coach Brian Kelly will oversee a major change at quarterback after losing Heisman Trophy winner and two-way threat Jayden Daniels and his top receiving target, but in place of Daniels he will acquire Garrett Nussmeyer, a pocket passer with arm strength and big potential, who will sit behind a strong line and have intriguing options at running back and receiver.
A solid transfer portal addition put the Buckeyes in contention for the Big Ten title this season after veteran quarterback Will Howard delivered the best passing performance of his career after transferring from Kansas State and two-time SEC rushing champion Quinshon Judkins piled up 2,725 yards and 31 TDs during that time. Working with leading rusher Tre'Veyon Henderson, receiver Emeka Egbuka and unanimous No. 1 freshman recruit Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State has a roster that two former coaches believe may be the best ever.
After losing a significant number of receiving targets from last year, Steve Sarkisian was aggressive in the portal, adding wide receivers Isaiah Bond from Alabama, Cyrus Bolden from Oregon State and Matthew Golden from Houston. All are expected to contribute immediately to returning star quarterback Quinn Ewers, and the Longhorns return four starting blockers in addition to SEC-bound rushers Jadon Blue and C.J. Baxter.
If there's one thing Cullen DeBoer does better than anyone else, it's run a high-flying offense. And with quarterback Jalen Milroe back, the Crimson Tide should start the post-Saban era with a dynamic offense. Milroe brings mobility in and out of the pocket and improved passing accuracy downfield a year ago. He should also improve blocking and solidify the backfield to help stabilize things. But how well did DeBoer do at wide receiver? That remains a question.
Dan Lanning came into the Big Ten already with arguably the best wide receiver corps in college football. Led by Gary Bryant Jr., Tez John and Trashon Holden, the unit was joined by former five-star recruit Evan Stewart. Not to mention veteran quarterback Dillon Gabriel, a two-way player with nearly 15,000 career yards, 126 touchdown passes and 26 rushing scores who would be the perfect replacement for Bo Nix for an offense that averaged 531 yards and 44 points per game last fall.
Carson Beck passed for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season, and four starting blockers return along with a skill rotation to help the offense thrive in 2024. Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey will be out, as will two of the Bulldogs' star backs, but WR transfers Colby Young and London Humphries are notable acquisitions, and former Florida rusher Trevor Etienne also transfers.
