After a disappointing rookie season in 2023, former Los Angeles Chargers first-round draft pick Quentin Johnston could have a big bounce back this year, writes Brandon Howard of CBS Sports.
“If you want a receiver you can get in the late draft with some upside and minimal downside, consider Johnston,” Howard suggests. “The second-year wide receiver struggled to make an impact as a rookie in the Los Angeles offense despite having a golden opportunity to step up early in the season. The Chargers' expected run-heavy offensive scheme will make it even tougher to expect a bounce-back. Fantasy managers could draft Johnston in the 11th round or higher and then move on him quickly if he doesn't deliver early in the season.”
Former Los Angeles general manager Tom Telesco selected Johnston 21st overall out of TCU. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound wide receiver had a disappointing 38 receptions for 431 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games.
Now, 2024 No. 34 draft pick Ladd McConkey seems poised to fill the pass-catching hole, as does veteran receiver Joshua Palmer, who was the most productive player at his position since last year. Johnston is a bit of a risky pick, but it's interesting to see Howard so optimistic about his chances to shine in his second season, especially with running backs expected to become more prominent in new head coach Jim Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Greg Roman's smash-mouth offense.
