The boxing world is eagerly awaiting the unification bout between superstar WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and IBF champion Vasiliy Lomachenko later this year. Unfortunately, there is some prejudice among fans due to the age difference between Tank Davis and 36-year-old Lomachenko.
I know fans may be stubborn and unwilling to give Tank the love he deserves if he beats Lomachenko, but fans need to put aside prejudices and petty dislikes and respect Tank when he beats Lomachenko without denying him the win because of Loma's age.
Fans have to be fair, even if it hurts their heart to show blind dislike for a talented player from Baltimore.
Preemptive discrediting is unfair
Fans are already underestimating Tank's chances of beating Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) before it even happens. They note that the former three-division world champion is approaching 37 years old and suggest that a win for Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) wouldn't mean as much because Lomachenko is practically a fossil.
Fans are jumping the gun on Tank and writing him off as a winner before he even beats Lomachenko. This is completely wrong. If Tank wins, he should receive 100% of the credit because a win over a two-time Olympic gold medalist would mean a lot.
Despite his age, Lomachenko is far from an old boxer and is still in the prime of his career, as he proved in his last two fights against George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney, winning the former and showing he deservedly won the latter.
Lomachenko still has the skill and ability to beat Tank Davis at boxing if he doesn't get caught out in the bout, and fans denying him a chance to win doesn't help either Tank or Lomachenko.
Tank is a great fighter with exceptional ability, as he has proven over the years by taking risks to win titles in three weight classes and become a PPV star in just 11 years. It is unfair to Tank that he doesn't receive enough praise from fans or is somehow discounted for his chances at beating Lomachenko.
