Quarterback Russell Wilson said he's “back in the ring” ahead of his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wilson shared a video of himself practicing boxing with X, along with the hashtag “#QuickFeetHeavyHands.”
“I started in 2018 and 2020 and had the best years,” Wilson wrote to X. “Then COVID-19 hit in 2020 and I was never able to come back.”
Wilson then praised veteran boxing trainers Freddie Roach and Marvin Somodio.
Wilson also shared a photo of himself with Dominican Republic boxer Elvis Rodriguez on his Instagram Story.
It was a busy training day for Wilson, who also shared a video of himself sprinting on the UCLA football field.
According to ESPN reporter Sheel Kapadia, Wilson first trained with Roach in 2017. Roach is known for coaching Manny Pacquiao for over 10 years.
The then-Seattle Seahawks quarterback told Kapadia that boxing helped him “develop balance and quickness and continually build his game.”
“The idea that anything can happen at any time, so you have to be ready for it,” Wilson told Kapadia in 2017. “And a good boxer also has a good defense, which means they can move and they can escape.”
“So that was really important for me as well. And it's a great conditioning workout and one of the hardest workouts I've ever done.”
Wilson told GQ's Emily Abbate in 2018 that she uses boxing as a regular training regimen.
COVID-19 may have prevented Wilson from continuing that routine, but after being released by the Denver Broncos, it seems he's now back in the ring at just the right time to prepare for a return season.
