Sunny Edwards vs Adrian Curiel betting analysis
This weekend's fight card in Phoenix, Arizona, is heavily favored, with former IBF flyweight titleholder Sonny Edwards looking to bounce back from a loss on Saturday to Mexico's Adrian Curiel when he takes on another former champion.
Edwards had his unbeaten record snapped by Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez in a bout against Mexican legend Juan Francisco Estrada last December, while Curiel, who has moved up to flyweight, was stopped in dramatic fashion by hard-hitting South African fighter Sivenathi Nonsingha in his last bout.
Sonny Edwards goes into this race as the -400 favourite with most bookmakers, with Adrian Curiel expected to return as the +300 underdog.
Sunny needs to shine in the flyweight division photo.
With former champion Jesse Rodriguez continuing to move up the weight classes this weekend when he takes on Juan Francisco Estrada in the junior bantamweight division and with a number of other belts on the line at flyweight, Sonny Edwards has a great opportunity to get back on track with an impressive win on Saturday.
Longtime foe Julio Cesar Martinez, who beat Edwards' brother Charlie in 2019, also vacated his WBC belt to move up to junior bantamweight, so not only does this give Edwards a chance to score a big win at flyweight, it could also mean moving up to junior bantamweight for a bout with Martinez that he's wanted for years.
Curiel receives a shock in his hometown of Mexico
Adrian Curiel's career may not have gotten off to a spectacular start, but the tough Mexican fighter has certainly hit his stride over the past few years, reeling off eight straight wins (despite an unexpected technical draw against Jose Ramirez Armenta) and scoring an impressive second-round knockout victory over champion Sivenati Nonsingha in Monaco late last year.
With Nonsinga being the long-time champion and a rematch clause in place, the bout, especially in Oaxaca, was expected to cap Curiel's career and make him a star in his native Mexico.
Unfortunately for Curiel, Nonsinga learned his lesson from the first bout, surviving an early onslaught from Curiel before finishing him off with a flurry of powerful punches late in the 10th round.

Last year, Adrian Curiel shocked boxing fans by knocking out unbeaten and current champion Sivenati Nonsingha in two rounds, but this was the exception and not the rule in Curiel's career so far.
He's a very energetic fighter who likes to get inside his opponents and land a ton of punches, but despite a highlight KO against Nongsinga, his power isn't actually that impressive, and instead he often tires his opponents out with pure offensive endurance.
In the rematch, Curiel came forward in a straight line and showed the ability to basically anticipate every attack he threw, which would be something a highly intelligent and technical boxer like Sonny Edwards would enjoy a lot in this bout.
Maybe Curiel will get lucky again with that right hand, and the large Mexican crowd in Phoenix will no doubt be in favor of that, but he'll need to get lucky against one of the best defensive fighters in the sport today, because it's hard to imagine anything other than a wide points decision win for Sonny Edwards in this bout.
