Summer is fast approaching and things are heating up in the “Lone Star State,” but by the end of June, it's even hotter in the Texas border town of Hidalgo.
Longtime Texas boxing promoter Anthony Cavazos will return to fight on Friday night, June 28th, at Payne Arena in Hidalgo.
After providing some great nights of boxing with his Border Wars series, Cavazos is looking to provide another thrill for combat sports fans with a line-up of fantastic up-and-coming fighters.
If you're going to Cavazos' show, know that he's not trying to defend a record; he wants to give fight fans an enthusiastic response. He has no problem taking on undefeated fighters. And as this card shows, the Texas fighter has no problem taking the risk of going “0” because many of the bouts will be against undefeated fighters.
The show will see the return of popular fighter Fabian Diaz, from Edinburg, Texas, bringing a perfect record of 5-0 (2 KOs) to face experienced California fighter Marcos Forestal, who has a record of 9-1 (5 KOs) with the WWBO North American Championship title on the line that night.
The show features a bunch of Texans competing for a perfect ledger.
San Juan’s Esteban Garza (4-0, 2 KOs) will face off against talented boxer John Atiles (5-0, 1 draw) of Cypress.
Edinburg’s Rigoliberto Rivera (1-0) will be looking for his second win against unbeaten power puncher Daniel Martinez (3-0, 3 KOs) of McAllen.
Edinburgh’s Adolfo Alanis (6-0, 1 KO) will be looking for his seventh win when he takes on Corpus Christi’s Patrick Haro (1-0).
Harlingen's Ricardo Castillo will be looking to make a successful pro debut with his second defeat to Weslaco's Brian Santiago (0-1).
McAllen's Gustavo Salazar will make his pro debut against Weslaco's slugger Peter Balderas Jr. (1-1, 1 KO).
Unbeaten Reggie Ray Martinez (2-0) of Harlingen will look for his third win when he takes on 25-fight veteran Hector Gutierrez of Mission.
And Brownsville's Eduardo Castillo will make his pro debut against 15-fight veteran Osvaldo Negrete of Mexico.
This is a fantastic card, featuring some of the rising stars in Texas boxing.
Cavazos, a longtime and highly regarded Texas promoter, has been active on social media from his home in Texas leading up to the fight, and it's shaping up to be a great night of boxing for combat sports fans.
“Diaz will be in the main event on June 28th,” Cavazos said. “He's undefeated and fighting for the WWBO North American title, so it's going to be a fantastic main event at Payne Arena,” he said. “We wanted to find a fighter with a winning record to give boxing fans what they deserve – Las Vegas-style boxing in the Rio Grande Valley.”
Fight fans will also have the chance to meet world champion Brandon Figueroa, who will be sitting ringside at the arena on fight day.
