Richardson's time of 10.71 seconds is the fastest time in the girls' 100 meters this year.
Sha'Carey Richardson is officially headed to Paris to compete in her first Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old sprinter ran the 100 meters in 10.71 seconds on Saturday night to qualify for the meet.
Richardson's time, set at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, was the fastest woman's time in the event this year, according to World Athletics.
Immediately after Richardson's accomplishment, she dropped to her knees and shared a hug with fellow swimmers Melissa Jefferson and Towanisha Terry, who, along with Richardson, qualified for the Paris Olympics with times of 10.80 and 10.89 seconds, respectively.
Richardson will begin her Olympic journey when qualifying for the women's 100 meters begins in Paris on August 2.
Richardson ran the 100 metres in 10.65 seconds at the IAAF World Championships in Budapest, Hungary last August.
In 2021, Richardson won the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials, becoming the fastest American woman and putting her in position to compete for a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, but her chances of competing in the Olympic 100 meters disappeared when it was announced that she had tested positive for THC, a chemical found in marijuana.
At the time, Richardson told reporters she had used marijuana as a way to cope with the death of her mother during Olympic trials in Oregon, where recreational marijuana use is legal. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency suspended her for 30 days, citing the World Anti-Doping Agency's ban on marijuana.
