While the swimming world's attention was focused on top-tier competitions around the world, such as the U.S. Olympic Trials and European Championships, some impressive performances were on display at high school tournaments in Japan.
17-year-olds compete in races on first day of the 62nd Kanagawa Prefectural Track and Field Championships Mizuki Hirai She recorded an astounding time of 56.33 seconds in the women's 100m butterfly.
Hirai started in 26.26 seconds and finished in 30.07 seconds, setting a new personal best. The time beat her previous best of 56.91 seconds, which she recorded when she won the event at this year's Japan Olympic Trials to qualify for next month's Olympics. Her previous best was 26.66/30.25.
Hirai had her breakthrough season last year when she won bronze at the World Junior Championships, and her time of 58.35 seconds in Netanya means she has already shaved two seconds off her time in the popular event in less than a year.

Meanwhile, Hirai is maintaining his second-best record in Japanese history, Rikako IkeeThe national record of 56.08 was recorded in 2018.
Hirai's best result of 56.33 earned him sixth place in the world rankings this season.
