Police warn of new online dating scam
Columbus, Ohio–The Columbus Police Department is warning the public about an increase in internet scams targeting users of dating apps. Detectives report that scammers lure individuals into exchanging explicit photos, then claim the photos are being sent to minors. The scammers pose as law enforcement and try to intimidate victims into paying money to avoid possible legal liability.
Officials say these scams have evolved, allowing scammers to fake phone numbers from police departments or other authorities to appear more trustworthy. Police stress that genuine law enforcement agencies will never ask for money on dating apps or on social media as a solution to a legal problem.
The Columbus Police Department advises anyone who encounters such a scam to cease all communication and immediately report the incident to local authorities. The department stresses the importance of being vigilant and skeptical of online interactions, especially with strangers.
Police also recommend that if you come across any suspicious communication, you should call the agency's phone number directly to verify who is on the other end — taking this precaution can help prevent you from falling victim to sophisticated scams.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the tactics used by these scammers to remain vigilant and protect themselves.
