Brighton's Danthony Muniz is spending the late spring preparing for a new mixed martial arts bout.
The bout will feature bantamweight contender Jason Scott and will take place at the Stampede Club, 2430 S. Havana St. in Aurora, on Saturday, July 20. The first bout will kick off at 12:30 p.m., with doors opening at noon.
Scott has won four of his six professional fights. According to the website Tapout, Muniz will retain the regional ranking regardless of the outcome of this fight.
“I know that my opponent is a very strong wrestler and an experienced fighter who has defended an MMA title,” Muniz said. “My coaches will study tape of my opponent and come up with some kind of game plan to identify his weaknesses and my strengths.”
Muniz's first professional fight was in October 2021. He had one scheduled fight last year canceled. Besides his interest in martial arts, Muniz is also a fan of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
“I always knew this match would happen,” Muniz said. “We were always in the same group of competitors, but we always missed each other.”
My training plan remains the same: I start my day with weight training first thing in the morning, followed by a five-mile run, jiu-jitsu practice, assault bike sprints, and then an hour of training in the evening.
This means 4-5 hours of training every day.
“Consciously, I tell myself that I've made great progress, but I'm a very harsh critic of myself, so I always think there's more I can improve on or learn,” Muniz said. “The strength I have coming onto this stage is how much I've grown mentally and the incredible craft we're all learning behind the scenes.”
Tickets are available through Colorado Jiu Jitsu Club (purplepass.com), and the bout is part of the club's Caged Fireworks show.
“It's already a dream come true to be able to compete on stage doing what you love,” Muniz says, “but this is far from where we want to be.”
