Anne Arundel County Police have arrested a man in connection to a fatal shooting that left a boxer dead in Odenton on Monday night. According to county police, officers were called to a report of a shooting near the intersection of Meadowmist Way and Sterick Drive at approximately 9:45 p.m., police said. Officers found Odenton resident Isaiah Olugbemi, 27, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. “A resident reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area. Officers found a 27-year-old male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, who was transported to Baltimore where he later died from his injuries due to shock trauma,” Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy told 11News. Police said residents reported hearing several gunshots outside the home, and investigators said preliminary information suggests there may have been an altercation. “We believe it was targeted, not random, so there is no ongoing threat to the community,” Mulcahy told 11 News. Late Tuesday afternoon, 11 News reported police arrested Nicholas Francis Xavier Giroux, 36, of Odenton, and charged him with first- and second-degree murder. Police told 11 News that investigators identified Giroux through evidence collection and witness testimony. According to information obtained by 11 News, Olugbemi was a three-sport star in high school and college, a father and a boxer with dreams of going professional. “We've heard that Olugbemi was a boxer, a promising boxer, so we understand this is a case that really impacts the entire community,” Mulcahy told 11 News. “(He) was a good guy, really laid back. He loved to have fun,” said Jaquan Campbell, a friend of the victim. “(He) was always smiling. He went to work, he went to the gym, he took care of his kids. This should never have happened to him.” Olugbemi had just won a national boxing championship three weeks earlier and was shot after returning home from training at Odenton Fitness. Campbell said Olugbemi spoke with him until about 9:30 p.m. and then returned home. “He wanted to make this gym famous, that's what he wanted. He wanted to put his name on this gym. But there are definitely others who will take his place. We're going to make sure he lives through us,” Campbell told 11News. Family members gathered near Olugbemi's home on Tuesday, while investigators searched the home for clues. “Obviously, it's still early in the investigation. Detectives are trying to determine what led up to this, what happened before that. Why would someone want to shoot and kill this person?” Mulcahy told 11News. “We are now appealing for the public to come forward with anything they may know regarding what led up to this incident.” Investigators are urging residents to share any personal surveillance or doorbell footage and to call detectives at 410-222-4731.
