Lowell, Massachusetts – Twenty-five players from the University of Massachusetts Lowell ice hockey team have been selected to the 2023-24 Hockey East All-Academic Team, earning the top spot in Hockey East, the conference office announced Tuesday.
To be selected to the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Maine and Vermont had the second-most recipients in Hockey East with 24 award recipients each. Massachusetts and Northeastern were next with 22 award recipients each.
The River Hawks were led by a sophomore defenseman. Mark Cooper (Cambridge, Ontario) and freshman forward Jonathan Horne (Southbury, Connecticut) were both named to the Hockey East All-Academic All-Star Team for having the highest GPA at their respective positions. Cooper finished the year with a 3.97 GPA in Quantitative Economics, while Horn finished with a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in Business Administration. This is the second consecutive year Cooper has been named to the All-Academic All-Star Team, following his freshman season last year.
Six River Hawks players made the Hockey East All-Academic team for the third time as juniors. Owen Cole (Dunville, Ontario Isaac Johnson (Angelholm, Sweden) Edvard Nordlund (Nacka, Sweden) and Senior Brendan Engum (Burnsville, Minnesota) Ben Meehan (Walpole, Massachusetts) and Henry Welsh (Lakeville, Minnesota) Cole, Johnson and Nordlund all earned this honor during their three years at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Five sophomores also received All-Academic honors for the second time in a row, making them the second consecutive junior players to receive the award. The award winners are as follows: Mitchell Becker (Rogers, Minnesota) Dylan Bentley (Peoria, Illinois) Jack Collins (Canton, New York) TJ Schweigert (Manahawkin, New Jersey) and Scout Truman (Lethbridge, Alberta). Joining the two-time All-Academic Team selection were a group of juniors. Matt Krasa (South Setauket, New York) Luke Pavich (Clarence Center, New York) and Sr. Jake Stella (Karlstad, Sweden) and graduate student Filip Fornåå Svensson (Linköping, Sweden).
Rounding out the list of award recipients are first-time All-Academic recipients. In addition to Horn, that list also includes a freshman. Ben Brunette (North Bay, Ontario) Adam Cardona (Beaconsfield, Quebec), Sean Kilcullen (Kensington, Maryland); Jaden Moriello (Saugus, Massachusetts) and Sean O'Donnell (Crescent, Pennsylvania), Jr. Stephen Owens (Midlothian, Virginia) and graduate students Nick Granowitz (McComb, Michigan) and Alex Peterson (Collegeville, Pennsylvania).
A total of 202 student-athletes across the league who recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2023-24 season were selected to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
