An old six-round sparring video between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Devin Haney from a famous fight at Mayweather Boxing Gym was released today.
Tank Davis didn't seem to be taking the fight seriously until he attacked Haney at the end, but Haney needed a rescue. Poor Tank was in the ring with both Haney and Floyd Mayweather Jr. It wasn't fair.
The final parts of the sparring video have already been released, but the early rounds in which Haney dominated had not yet been released. Haney was doing well early on while Tank was hiding and letting his guard down.
Tank looked very calm early in the sparring session, but something inside him snapped and he brutally destroyed Haney in the final few rounds, going for the finish.
Mayweather to become Haney's coach and cheerleader
What's interesting is that Mayweather seems to be acting as coach and referee, encouraging Haney. When Tank flipped the switch, Haney got upset. It was clear that he had no fighting spirit and if this was a real fight, it would have ended abruptly like last night's fight between Gervonta and Frank Martin.
The sparring was so long ago I don't know anything about it, and they both had head gear on. Haney looked good while Tank hid away early on, but then he switched on and was completely defeated in no time.
Tank landed some shots that would have knocked Haney out in a real fight.
Haney's career in jeopardy
Haney's career is on the line after losing his last fight, so the sparring video between him and Tank Davis means nothing.
Haney's popularity has plummeted since his loss to Ryan Garcia last April, and fans are unlikely to be willing to pay to see them fight. That loss destroyed Haney's credibility, and fans now view him as perhaps the weakest of the 140-pound champions.
Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) needs to try to bounce back from his loss with a mandatory WBA light welterweight title defense against Sandor Martin if he doesn't want to vacate the belt, and if he can't make the cut to 140 pounds, maybe he should vacate the belt.
