Thailand improved on its previous performance, with the Southeast Asian boxing powerhouse securing eight spots for the Paris Olympics. Thailand's eight spots means it is their best showing since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Thailand made its Olympic debut in 1956 in Melbourne, where all of its boxers were eliminated in the qualifying rounds. The Southeast Asian nation has competed and qualified for 16 Olympic boxing tournaments between 1956 and 2021.
Thailand's first Olympic medal, a bronze medal, was won by young talent Phayao Pooltarat in the 48kg division in 1976. Los Angeles gave Thailand its second medal in boxing, with Dawee Unpongmaha winning the silver medal in the light welterweight (63.5kg) division.
At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Thailand won one medal, bronze won by Fayol Mursan, and four years later at Barcelona, Arkom Chiangrai won the bronze medal.
Thailand won gold medals in the next four Olympics: Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing. Somluk Khamsing, Wijan Pongrid, Manus Boonjumnong and Somjit Jongjohor won gold medals from 1996 to 2008. Woraphoj Petchkhum won another silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, a surprise result.
Thailand's last men's medal at the Olympics was a silver medal won by Kaew Pongprayoung at the 2012 London Olympics. The veteran Thai was narrowly defeated by two-time Olympic champion Zou Shiming of China in the light flyweight (49kg) final in London.
Sudhapol Seesongdee became Thailand's first female boxer to win a bronze medal at an Olympic Games. The 30-year-old boxer reached the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics where she closely fought against Irish champion Kelly Harrington in the women's lightweight (60kg) category.
Thailand has secured five berths at the Hangzhou Asian Games, with one of its female stars securing the country's sixth berth at the inaugural Asian Games.st The World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers were held in Bangkok, Thailand hosting the event for the second time.and Two Thai boxers qualified for the Paris Games at the World Olympic Qualifiers held two weeks ago. Thailand will hold training camps in Germany and France ahead of the Paris Olympics, and is aiming to win its fifth Olympic title in boxing this summer.
