Floyd Mayweather remains one of the biggest names in boxing, but he has announced big changes to his promotional company.
Mayweather founded Mayweather Promotions late in his professional career and has trained several big name boxers in recent years.
Most notable is Gervonta Davis, who makes his return on Saturday against Frank Martin, after working with Mayweather for years before the two apparently parted ways after a falling out.
A key figure in Mayweather Promotions has been CEO Leonard Ellerbe since the company's inception, but Mayweather has announced he will be stepping down from that role, with a high-profile successor already in place.
“Mayweather Promotions would like to express its deepest gratitude to Leonard Ellerbe for his outstanding leadership and unwavering dedication over the years. Leonard has been an integral part of our team and has contributed to numerous business endeavors that have played a pivotal role in the success of Mayweather Promotions.”
“After many years of hard work and dedication, Leonard has made the heartfelt decision to step down as CEO to spend more time with his family and loved ones. We respect his decision and are incredibly grateful for his leadership in shaping Mayweather Promotions into the thriving organization it is today.”
“Going forward, I am excited to announce that Mayweather Promotions will be working with Richard Schafer, a highly sought-after financial expert and phenomenal founder with over 40 years of experience in the boxing promotion industry.
“Together, we will establish a new Mayweather headquarters and presence in Los Angeles. Our goal is to make Mayweather Promotions a global success, supporting fighters around the world and helping them make profitable business decisions that will benefit them well beyond their boxing careers.”
“We look forward to this new chapter and the continued global success of Mayweather Promotions.”
Schafer is best known for his work with Oscar De La Hoya at Golden Boy Promotions and was heavily involved in promoting Mayweather's past fights, including his mega-fight with Ricky Hatton in 2007.
Since leaving Golden Boy, Schafer has held a variety of roles within the boxing world, but is set to hit the ground running in his new role with Mayweather Promotions.
