The college football world is in mourning after Southern Miss defensive back Marcus “MJ” Daniels was killed in a shooting in Hattiesburg on Tuesday night, according to the coroner.
Daniels was 21 years old.
“The University of Southern Mississippi and its athletic department mourn the loss of MJ Daniels, whose life was lost Tuesday night during an incident off-campus,” the university said in a statement.
“Our condolences go out to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
WDAM reported that Southern Miss football coach Will Hall and other university officials were at the scene of the shooting along with police and emergency personnel.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of MJ Daniels,” Hall said on X. “His smile was contagious and lit up a room. Please keep MJ's loved ones and his University of Southern Mississippi family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Daniels transferred from Ole Miss to Southern Miss where he was the starting cornerback last season, recording 29 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound player was expected to move to the safety position for the 2024 football season and be a starter again.
