51 of the remaining spots for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (23 women's and 28 men's) have been allocated to 13 boxing weight classes (6 women's and 7 men's) at the Bangkok Indoor Arena. All boxing qualification competitions will be held under the jurisdiction of the IOC Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU), which also oversees the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The PBU is taking all necessary measures to ensure the fairness of the boxing competitions for all boxers.
The path to qualification
More than 2,000 boxers from 172 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Refugee Olympic Team, and individual neutral athletes took part in Boxing's Road to Paris Qualification Series, with a total of 2,115 bouts played over two years, in seven tournaments on five continents, offering 239 spots. Nine general places will be confirmed at a later date, with one further place allocated to the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, completing the line-up of boxers competing in the Paris 2024 Boxing Tournament.
Speaking at the end of the qualification phase, IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said: “The final qualification event in Bangkok was a truly global event, with 578 athletes from 131 NOCs and refugee teams competing for the final qualifying spots to Paris 2024.”
“The boxing qualification process has always put the athletes first. Since last year, tournaments have been held on all continents, featuring exciting sporting competitions with hundreds of athletes taking part. We have demonstrated our commitment to transparency, innovation and authenticity. Throughout the qualification process, we have also engaged around 200 international technical officials and conducted an educational programme including face-to-face seminars, online workshops and courses.”
Among those already qualified is refugee Sindy Ngamba, who qualified for Paris 2024 at the first World Qualifier in March this year. The boxer will be part of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Refugee Olympic Team, a group of 36 athletes representing more than 100 million displaced people around the world.
Qualification would begin in 2023, with boxing qualification tournaments held as part of the European Games, Asian Games, Pan American Games and Pacific Games, which together with an ad hoc African qualifier in Dakar served as continental qualification stages, followed by two world qualification tournaments in Busto Arsizio, Italy and Bangkok, Thailand in 2024, eventually offering up to three different qualification opportunities for all athletes.
Boxing competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place from 27 July to 10 August and will feature 13 different weight classes (7 for men and 6 for women). The tournament will take place in two venues. The qualifiers and the first semi-finals will take place at the Arena Nord in Paris from 27 July to 4 August, while the finals of the tournament, including the gold medal match, will take place at the Roland Garros Stadium from 6 to 10 August. Paris 2024 Boxing Unit
The Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU) is a special unit established by the IOC Executive Committee with the task of organising and ensuring the delivery of the Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournaments and the boxing competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The decision comes after the International Boxing Association's (IBA) Olympic recognition was suspended at the IOC Session in June 2019, then revoked at the IOC Session in June 2023, and the IBA's announcement in June 2022 that it would not organise Olympic boxing qualifying tournaments or boxing events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
