HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – A University of Southern Mississippi football player has died in a shooting in Hattiesburg.
Forrest County Coroner Lisa Clem said Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr., 21, of Lucedale, was shot at Ivy Row Apartments on Tuesday, June 11. According to Hattiesburg police, the victim was found inside a vehicle at the scene.
Klem said McDaniels' body has been sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy.
“Our hearts go out to the Daniels family, and we are committed to finding the perpetrator and bringing justice to the victim and his family,” Hattiesburg Police Chief Hardy Sims said. “We ask for the community's help and encouragement to come forward with any information regarding this tragic incident and the untimely death of Marcus Daniels.”
McDaniels is a senior and was a cornerback on the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) football team. He played for Ole Miss football in 2021 and 2022. During his high school years, he attended George County High School.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of MJ Daniels. He had an infectious smile and lit up any venue. Please keep MJ's loved ones and his Southern Miss family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” USM head football coach Will Hall said.
“The University of Southern Mississippi and athletic department are mourning the loss of MJ Daniels, who lost his life Tuesday night in an incident off campus. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time,” University of Southern Mississippi officials said in a statement to WJTV 12 News.
USM Student Counseling Services is available to members of the Golden Eagle Football program and individuals close to the University.
