After missing out on the bout with Canelo Alvarez, David “El Monstro” Benavidez will take his talents to the light heavyweight division and make his 175-pound debut against former light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk.
Obviously, this fight will be new territory for Benavidez — many spectators noted during the press conference that he looked significantly smaller than Gvozdyk — but Benavidez is a well-known, unbeaten fighter, so if anyone could adapt to a new weight class, it's him.
The bout is for the absolute light heavyweight title. The other contenders are Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol (super champion). The two will likely meet later this year, as Beterbiev is currently injured and out of action. However, the winner of Benavidez vs. Gvozdyk will likely have to wait until 2025 to challenge for the WBA title.
