The transfer portal can improve a program, but how do you actually calculate not just which team had the best transfer class of 2024, but who had the best cycle? There are a few ways to break it down, but below we'll break down the Power Four conferences by category.
- Net rating increase
- Average Transfer Rating
- Transfer In
- Moving out
Why is it important to look at net rating gains? Not every team adds as much as they subtract in the portal, so the ledger math rarely lines up. So, to simplify matters and better evaluate teams heading into the summer, we took the average rating of players leaving each program (as rated by the 247Sports Transfer Rankings team) and compared it to the average rating of players entering the program. We then distilled that number down to a net gain or loss.
After taking a closer look at each conference earlier this week, here is a more comprehensive look at how each Power Four team performed in the 2024 transfer portal cycle: Each table is ordered by the team's net rating increase, but there is plenty of other information to glean.
ACC Transfer Portal Takeaways
- FSU is arguably the most successful program of the portal era. Under Norvell, the Seminoles have finished in the top 25 of the 247Sports rankings every year, with an average ranking of ninth. The Seminoles have done this despite not having more than 17 transfers over the past four years. Colorado (93 relocations in 2 years) or Arizona (60 transfers in two years).
- NC State is on track to win at least eight games for the fifth straight year thanks to some strong acquisitions through the portal, especially on the offensive end. Louisville The Cardinals added 24 players in the transfer portal during the first transfer window and added seven more in the spring, and four transfers then went back into the portal and left the team. The most notable departure was running back Penny Booneleft just a few months after arriving on campus, but the defensive line was hit the hardest as eight linemen entered the portal after reaching the ACC Championship Game.
-

New Hampshire This should improve the team's passing attack, which was the worst in the nation (126th) last season.
- 13 players James Madison Following the head coach Kurt CignettiOf the rebuilding teams, Indiana may be the most intriguing because of the amount of personnel turnover, and Cignetti is committed to immediately revamping a program that needed some revamping in the final two years of the Allen era.

Big 12 transfer portal key takeaways
- When a player leaves Utah, it's not usually to a better team (only 37.5% of departures went to a Power 4 team), but the incoming player is usually a highly rated prospect, which translates into a big boost in net rating each year.
- Cincinnati The school revamped its football roster after a disappointing three-win debut in the Big 12 Conference, adding 25 players after 33 players left the team. Indiana Quarterback Brendan Sorsby (90) tops the rookie list after a strong rookie debut last season.

- TCU Incoming call Transfers rank third in the Big 12, but several high-level departures tipped the mathematical scales as the Horned Frogs finished as the only negatively rated program in the Big 12. Still, only five of the 19 departures went to powerhouse programs and 13 of the inductees came from powerhouse programs, so take that into consideration.
