Known as the 'Fierce Man from Marrickville', Fenech is an incredibly impressive character having been world champion at three weight classes – bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight.
Fenech's aggressive fighting style and exceptional skill earned him international acclaim. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics before turning professional, with a record of 29 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.
Since retiring, Fenech has worked as a boxing trainer and commentator, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002, cementing his place as one of Australia's greatest boxers.
But the former professional player, now 60, revealed he recently nearly died after suffering from serious heart problems caused by an infection in one of his heart valves, as well as kidney and lung problems that required emergency surgery to stay alive.
“I nearly died a few months ago so my heart has been restored,” Fenech told Mirror Fighting. “I had a bad infection in my heart valve, a big blood clot in my calf and my left kidney had stopped functioning.”
“He also had problems with his lungs. They drained 7.5 litres of fluid from his lungs. The infection went down instead of up. Otherwise it could have spread to his brain.”
“I had the exact same surgery four years ago but this time it was much worse because I also had the surgery on my foot. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It's absolutely horrible, not just because of the pain I went through but what I put my family through. So, it's been quite a tough experience but I'm OK and happy and I hope to start training soon.”
