Rakimpur: Five fighters from Lakhimpur district of Assam brought glory to the state by winning three gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal in the inaugural North East India Mixed Martial Arts Striking Championship.
The championship was held in collaboration with the All India Mixed Martial Arts Federation and the West Bengal State Mixed Martial Arts Federation from June 7 to June 9 at the Delhi Public School premises in Dagapur, Siliguri.
In the tournament, Lakhimpur's Pratyosh Dutta, Kundan Koushik Hazarika and Jessica Ramdamo won gold medals in the striking MMA category, while Mridu Praban Deka won silver and Madan Thakuri won bronze medals respectively.
All these athletes are from AA Martial Arts & Sports Academy, Lakhimpur and participated in the championship representing the All Assam Mixed Martial Arts Association.
Meanwhile, a martial arts training centre was opened at Rakimpur College of Commerce in Rakimpur early last year. To mark the occasion, the college's Mind and Body Wellbeing Centre hosted an opening ceremony.
The ceremony, which took place on the campus, was attended by eminent personalities, veteran sportspersons, teachers and students of the college.
Dr Mukunda Rajbanshi, Retired Principal Rakimpur The centre was inaugurated in the presence of Girls' College Principal Rohit Hazarika.
In his inaugural address, Dr Rajbanshi reiterated to the students the importance of physical fitness and martial arts skills.
Citing the example of Indian soldiers in the Galwan skirmish, he said the country's territorial integrity was safeguarded by their physical strength.
