Alexander Volkanovski Now that he's no longer the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion, he's relishing the options before him.
Few fighters in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA) have delivered masterclass performances like those displayed during “The Great's” reign of the title. Unfortunately for Volkanovski, all good things must come to an end.
Volkanovski, 35, has been enjoying some time between fights since losing his title. Ilia Topuria Volkanovski committed to a rematch with Topuria following a second-round knockout (watch the highlights here) at UFC 298 in February 2024. It was just a matter of when. With all the time that has passed, Volkanovski remains hopeful the rematch will happen, whether or not he fights at lightweight by then.
“My next fight at featherweight will be for the title,” Volkanovski told ESPN Australia. “It's just a matter of timing. Of course, I wanted to wait. I don't know exactly what the plans are. I'm not chasing UFC, I'm just taking it easy, so I don't know if I have a plan or not. I do know for sure that my next fight is for the title. I wonder if something happens before that, and if it does, is it too long of a wait?”
“If that's true, then I think that's OK,” he continued. Dustin Poirier [wants to]”It would be a great fight. Obviously he's a good guy and we have a lot of respect for each other. Big name, very, very fun fight. It's something and I just wanted to explore, so you never know what's going to happen. Lightweight looks good, but my next featherweight fight is for the belt.”
Topuria has yet to defend his title, but all signs point to him and the former champion. Max Holloway, collision.
