Cobbs' Golden Chance
Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KOs) has the ability to hand former four-division world champion Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs) the first knockout loss of his career when he faces him on Friday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Broner, 34, hasn't had a good fight in over a decade, since knocking out Antonio DeMarco in eight rounds in 2012, and 12 years later he's still nowhere near that level.
Adrian needs a win to keep his slim hopes of a world title shot at welterweight alive. That's Broner's goal, but he'd be happy to move up to 147 pounds and take on Devin Haney for a nice payday. There's no way Broner can make the cut to 140 without exhausting himself.
This is a big opportunity for Cobbs to beat a big name fighter for the first time, and he's going to fight harder than ever to make the most of it. If the 34-year-old Cobbs loses this bout, he may never get another chance like this.
Trainer's Perspective
“We haven't seen either of them fight in a while, but Adrien's going to have to be at his best to win this fight,” trainer Steven Edwards told Mill City Boxing about Friday's welterweight bout between Adrien Broner and Blair Cobbs in Hollywood, Florida.
When asked who had more punching power, Edwards answered, “Blair.” “Broner has more experience, and I think Broner had the better fight overall, but punch by punch, Blair has more punching power. Broner used to be 130 pounds, so Blair is bigger than Broner.”
Cobbs is currently competing at a higher level than Broner, which is the main difference in this fight. Aside from the 5-foot-11-and-a-half-inch tall Cobbs' knockout loss to Alexis Rocha in 2022, he's performed well in his other fights and has a height advantage over the 5-foot-6-and-a-half-inch tall Broner.
“he [Cobbs] “He's always been around 140-147 pounds. He's a hard puncher. I'm not making this up. I have nothing to do with his career. I'm not taking any money from him. He blew holes in the heavy bag. He has the hardest puncher I've ever seen,” Edwards said of Cobbs.
If Cobbs can still land punches like Edwards says, Broner is going to have a hard time on Friday night. Broner will have to take a lot of punches to win, and I doubt he can still do that. He cut a lot of weight in training camp for this fight, but that won't be good when he gets pummeled by Cobbs tomorrow night.
“Broner knows how to be unstoppable. If he can't do anything else, he knows how to be unstoppable. I'm not going to say Blair will win or knock him out, but I think there's a good chance he'll go all the way. If anyone can be stopped, I think it's Blair more than Broner because Broner is a very tough guy.”
