Arizona State University football acquired New Mexico State quarterback Cameron Dyer on Tuesday, but he will likely switch from pitcher to catcher if he joins the Sun Devils.
Rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports, Dyer currently attends La Cueva High School in his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M. He was named the 2023 Gatorade New Mexico Player of the Year during his junior year after rushing for 2,897 yards, 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and 1,492 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Dyer led La Cueva to a 10-3 record and a place in the New Mexico 6A state championship game.
He is scheduled to graduate from high school in 2025.
Cameron Dyer changes position
Dyer also held offers from Arkansas State University, Louisiana-Monroe University, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, Texas Tech University, University of Utah, Utah State University and UTEP.
But when it came time to make a decision, he chose ASU because he was interested in moving to wide receiver. Luckily for Dyer, he'll be under the tutelage of former Steelers wide receiver and newly hired wide receivers coach Hines Ward.
In an interview with Sports360AZ's Jordan Hamm, Dyer had high praise for Ward.
“The fact that Hines Ward is the receivers coach, he's a former Super Bowl MVP, two-time Super Bowl winner and probably an NFL Hall of Famer,” Dyer said, “he's done it at the position that I was scouted for, at a high level, for a long time, at the highest level.”
The position change could be a challenge for Dyer, but Ward went through the same transition in high school and understands the adjustment Dyer will go through.
“When I first talked to him, I didn't know he'd played quarterback in high school,” Dyer said, “and he told me how he'd transitioned and moved over to the receiver position, so that put me at ease a little bit.”
