BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Five Panthers players from the Florida Tech baseball team have received Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators.
The five recipients were Carlos Guzman, Ridge Skarbek, Trenten Anderson, Jason Blackstone and Brett Kelly.
The 2023 Academic All-District Baseball Team is a prestigious selection by the College Sports Council that recognizes the nation's top scholar-athletes for their outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
Guzman, a senior, is earning a bachelor's degree in finance with an impeccable 4.0 overall GPA. On the field, he started 37 games as a catcher and designated hitter and played in 40 total games.
The Orlando, Fla., native batted .284/.388/.454 in his first season with the Panthers and led the team in RBIs (32) and home runs (6).
A graduate student in the MBA program, Skarbek has a cumulative academic GPA of 4.0. On the field, Skarbek was a mainstay in Tech's relief corps, appearing 18 times on the mound with a 4.85 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 29.2 innings pitched.
Anderson, a graduate student majoring in environmental resource management, holds a cumulative GPA of 3.83. The Orange City, Fla., native has made 10 starts and appeared in 17 games on the mound.
He finished the season pitching 47 innings and striking out 40 batters, second on the team.
Blackstone, a junior majoring in civil engineering, has a cumulative GPA of 3.54. A selection to the All-SSC Defensive Team for his performance at shortstop, the Indialantic, Fla. native appeared in and started 48 games for the Panthers. At the plate, he batted .285/.377/.352 while finishing second on the team in total bases (68), total hits (55), doubles (8) and stolen bases (11).
Kelly, a senior majoring in aeronautical sciences, has a cumulative GPA of 3.58. On the field, he played and started in 35 games for Tech as a center fielder. Kelly batted .311/.422/.409 with 54 total bases, 41 hits, eight doubles and one home run.
