Detroit Flint native Claressa Shields will be looking to add to a boxing resume that already includes “greatest woman of all time” status when she challenges Vanessa Lapage-Joanis for the WBC Women's Heavyweight World Championship on July 27 at Little Caesars Arena.
The bout will be the main event of a night of boxing action presented by Sarita Promotions and 313 Presents, which will also feature the vacant WBO light heavyweight championship title on a special edition of “Big Time Boxing USA,” broadcast live on DAZN.
The 29-year-old Shields is a three-division world champion and the only female fighter in the four-belt era (junior middleweight and middleweight) to go undefeated in two different weight classes.
With this bout, Shields will move up two weight classes and have a chance to become a four-weight world champion.
In her most recent boxing bout, Shields defended her middleweight belt against Marisela Cornejo in June 2023 with a dominant 10-round unanimous decision victory.
The event was the first boxing match held at the LCA and was attended by 11,784 fans.
“The Queen of Boxing is back! Since my MMA victory in February, I've been really looking forward to getting back in the ring. I'm excited to bring another exciting fight to Little Caesars Arena. Last time, 12,000 fans packed the arena, but this time, we're going to have so much fun that the roof will blow off the building!”
This is a meaningful and unique fight for me to become a world champion in my fourth weight class against a very tough champion two weight classes above me. It's an exciting time for women's sport and I'm grateful to DAZN for providing a global platform for women's boxing. I will do my best, bring the GWOAT energy and continue to put women's boxing on the map.”
