Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will take on a new role playing martial arts star Mark Carr in the new biopic “Smashing Machine,” due to hit theaters next year.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson transformed himself for his new role in the biopic “Smashing Machine.”
The film is due for release next year and sees Johnson play Mark Carr, a mixed martial artist and former UFC fighter. The Smashing Machine is expected to focus on Carr's history of drug abuse and his relationship with his then-girlfriend Dawn Staples, played by Emily Blunt. Johnson is part of a star-studded cast that also includes Emily Blunt as his partner, Lindsey Gavin and Oleksandr Usyk.
Photos of Dwyane in his new role have been shared, but fans are having a hard time recognising him. In the picture, Dwyane is seen wearing a yellow sweatshirt and instead of his usual shaved head, he has short, curly brown hair, making him look like a totally different person.

On Twitter/X, one fan wrote, “Dwayne looks totally different,” while another wrote, “Is that The Rock? Totally unrecognizable,” while a third wrote, “I had to zoom in to make sure it was really him. Wow… literally unrecognizable!”. A fourth wrote, “I didn't even recognize him!” Another fan wrote, “He looks totally different.”
Other photos from the film have been released as promotional shots, and appear to feature Emily Blunt playing Kerr's then-partner Dawn Staples. In one photo, Dwayne is seen sitting shirtless in the corner of a boxing ring wearing only red shorts, while Emily stands next to him on the outside of the ring, looking up at her partner in a low-cut white tank top.
The film is expected to chart Carr's rise to fame and his fall from opioid addiction, and will combine fact and fiction to tell the tale of his life, following an HBO documentary released in 2002.
Johnson surprised fans earlier this year with an unexpected career move away from movies, wrestling, and even tequila to branch out into the skincare industry. In March, he launched a line of men's beauty products called Papatui, with a collection already available on his website, Papatui.com, and sold in Target stores across the U.S.
Dwyane took to Instagram to announce the line while speaking out about the stigma surrounding men's skincare. He captioned the post, “Welcome to my @papatui_ world of men's care. As you all know I'm an advocate for health, grooming, and men taking better care of themselves. We don't always talk about it, but we guys all want to look and feel good.”
