Aside from trips to the charity stripe, nothing is free in the NBA. The league runs on trades, with one team giving up another to get something. That doesn't change even if you have one of those deal-making front offices, like the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 76ers find themselves at the top of the food chain this offseason, meaning they can pick their food, whether it be in free agency or on the trade market. Of course, they'll have to pay the price to get the players they want, but they have All-Stars they can get for essentially free.
One name that has been popping up in rumors for over a year now is Bulls guard Zach LaVine. The All-Star has long been one of Philadelphia's top third-string suitors, and he'll almost certainly be in the new uniforms next season.
But it appears LaVine's fee won't be the high amount typically paid to a player of his stature. According to NBC Sports Chicago's KC Johnson, the Bulls are asking a lot less for LaVine, and the team is confident the front office is willing to take a pay cut. He's due $138 million over the next three seasons.
Chicago reportedly tried to move LaVine at the trade deadline, a bold offer given his decision to undergo season-ending surgery, but it predictably fell through. The Bulls have a high barrier of entry to join the All-Star negotiations, and it's unlikely there will be a strong market for LaVine.
The 76ers are obviously looking to acquire a bigger name this summer, but LaVine at least presents himself as a viable option for them if their original plans fall through. It's also worth noting that LaVine has named Philadelphia as a possible trade destination.
While there are certainly concerns about LaVine's defense and durability, he remains one of the most efficient scorers in the NBA and can singlehandedly break down defenses at all three levels, but there are question marks over his suitability and his contract may not make him an attractive prospect for a team like the 76ers who are looking to make a big catch in the near future.
