After their recent showdown in the ongoing World Qualifying Tournament, USA Boxing took to their official Instagram account to share with fans the jubilant news regarding Omari Jones' recent victory. Alongside the photo, USA Boxing wrote:ticket punched @bangerputdempaws is eligible for @Paris2024 Won the 71kg class at the 1st Olympic World Qualifying Tournament.“
Omari Jones emerged as a force to be reckoned with after falling off the U.S. roster on the final day of the 2024 Olympic World Qualification Tournament at Busto Arsizio. As soon as he stepped into the boxing ring, the 2021 World Championship silver medalist started dominating his opponent boxer Nishant Dev from India 4-1 in the final match.
Jones said in an exclusive interview with USA Boxing.I am officially an Olympian…first of all, glory be to God. This is for the kids of Orlando and to show them it's possible and you can do it too. At one point in my life I thought it was impossible, but I was able to do it. Orlando, I'm coming back as an Olympian!“
With the help of a strong jab and defensive technique, Jones opened up an early 5-0 lead. However, Dev made a comeback in the second round and won four of the five judges' cards in the showdown. With his Olympic berth at stake, Jones couldn't afford to miss out on a berth that would jeopardize his Olympic dreams. There, he used his jab and sidestep techniques to wrest victory from Dev's hands.
