WATERFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – After-school programs in Waterford keep kids energized and moving while trying something new.
They break the boards and stand in a line. I will get my white belt and do it with confidence.
It looks like a martial arts class, but they are local kids participating in an after-school program.
“You have to go to the chain bar, put your foot up and kick it like that,” explained Logan, of Quaker Hill Elementary School.
The best part about this program? It's free! This four-week program of his is offered through Gabriel's Martial Arts in Waterford and travels to schools to make it more convenient for students.
“The majority of schools have welcomed us with open arms, children are more disciplined and well-behaved in the classroom when we are there, and you can feel the difference when they know it's Karate Day. We're told they're starting,''' said Jason Gabriel, owner of Gabriel's Martial Arts.
At the end of the four weeks, parents are invited to the martial arts studio to see what their children have learned.
“It's not just about kicking and punching. We actually learned things that are useful in everyday life,” said Samantha, a fourth-grader.
This program allows students to build confidence, learn new skills, and get up and moving after long classes.
“I felt like nothing could stop me and I should continue my martial arts journey,'' explained 9-year-old Jamie Semotan.
