Ann Arbor, Michigan — After careful consideration of previous alcohol sales rollouts and fan experiences at Yost Ice Arena and Crisler Center, the University of Michigan Athletic Department plans to implement alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium beginning with the 2024 football season.
The board voted May 16 to implement a Class C liquor license at the Big House, beginning with the Aug. 31 home football game against Fresno State.
The board approved applying for liquor licenses for the University of Michigan's three athletic venues (Michigan Stadium, Yost Ice Arena and Crisler Center) with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission in October 2023. The board also voted to review the implementation of the Crisler and Yost licenses, which began in February, and the rollout of those two venues before considering implementing it at Michigan Stadium.
As part of the implementation process, the athletic department will collaborate and meet regularly with campus partners, including the Office of Student Life, Public Safety and Security, Risk Management and Government Relations, to ensure a safe and responsible rollout of alcohol sales at Crisler and Yost, which began in February.
Since implementation, there have been no reported drinking-related behavioral problems or alcohol-related medical responses at either venue.
Information gleaned from the review informed the University's best practices across venues and helped expand alcohol sales to Michigan Stadium.
Procedures for complying with Michigan law and the Liquor Control Board rules and regulations are also implemented by the athletic department, as are UM’s alcohol-related policies.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, regulatory features also include requiring all customers to show identification with every purchase and limiting alcoholic beverages to two per transaction per guest of legal drinking age.
Additionally, the Athletic Department is working with the Division of Student Life to promote responsible drinking messaging at each venue and ensure a safe environment for all fans at every event.
Michigan Athletics will use the proceeds to cover operating expenses, and a portion will be donated to the university to help fund research projects on campus.
