CMB.TECH and Dutch shipbuilder Damen have signed an agreement to cooperate on hydrogen-powered ASD tugboats.
The tugs will use CMB.TECH's dual-fuel hydrogen technology and will be built by Damen. The cooperation will include work on the first four vessels.
Shipping classification society Lloyd's Register has already given approval in principle to CMB.TECH and Damen for their hydrogen solution to be installed on board tugboats.
With a bollard towing capacity of 80 tonnes, the ASD tugs will be fitted with four high-speed dual-fuel hydrogen engines and a modular storage system for compressed hydrogen. Each tug can carry up to 16 hydrogen bottles, storing a total of 736 kg of 350 bar pressurised hydrogen.
The tug will run primarily on hydrogen but is equipped to switch to fully operate on conventional fuel if necessary. The tug can carry a total of 160 cubic metres of fuel.
“ASD tugs are the ideal asset to start the decarbonization of port operations. Our hydrogen tugs will enable all ports around the world to reduce their carbon emissions and create demand for green hydrogen production,” said Alexander Savelis, CEO of CMB.TECH.
Damen and CMB.TECH have CSOV Series It is being built by a Dutch company for CMB.TECH subsidiary Windcat.
In another hydrogen-related development, Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, a joint venture between CMB.TECH and Ohlthaver & List Group, revealed plans earlier this month to develop Africa's first dual-fuel hydrogen-powered vessel.
