The 24th-ranked Texas Longhorns (35-10, 20-10 NBA) are back in action as they return to Arlington for the annual Big 12 Championship, opening this season's tournament with a showdown against the Texas Tech Red Raiders (31-24, 12-18 NBA).
These two teams enter the tournament showdown on completely opposite trajectories. Texas Tech lost their last game to the Arizona State Sun Devils and lost seven of their last eight games, with their only win coming against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. But things are looking up for the Longhorns.
They entered this game on a three-game winning streak and earned their first sweep over the Kansas Jayhawks in conference play to close out the regular season. This was their sixth straight win to end the season, and their overall record in the conference series was an overwhelming 9-1. The only loss was, of course, against the BYU Cougars.
However, a victory in this match would be a big step forward for both teams. For the Red Raiders, their slim hopes of making it to the Field of 64 remain alive. For the Longhorns, a win further strengthens their postseason berth and puts them in position to advance to a favorable region in the NCAA Tournament.
