HAVERHILL — Superintendent Maureen Lynch congratulated 125 Whittier Tech students who were recently recognized for their participation in an early college program held in partnership with Northern Essex Community College (NECC).
In March 2021, Whittier Tech and NECC were granted accelerated college designation, creating a natural pipeline for Whittier juniors and seniors to earn college credit for free. This program also helps offset the cost of a college education.
Students who begin the program in their third year can earn up to 12 credits by the time they graduate. Students starting in their fourth year can earn up to six credits. Credit is accepted at all state universities in Massachusetts, including NECC.
On Thursday, May 16, 125 Whittier College students were recognized for completing the program during a ceremony held at NECC’s Haverhill campus.
The ceremony included welcoming remarks by Aaron Altman, NECC's Deputy Director of PK12 Partnerships. Speech by NECC Class of 2025, Haverhill High School Class of 2023, Promise Scholar, and alumni speaker Osaim Omar. Thoughts from faculty member Dawn Wheaton, program coordinator, health professions faculty member, and faculty advisor.
“Tonight, as all of us graduates come together to reflect on our accomplishments, we also recognize the privilege this program has given us,” said student speaker Gabriella from Haverhill, a marketing major.・Mr. Ortiz said. “The invaluable benefit of taking an early university course is that you get a real taste of what university is like. We know what it means to learn the routines you need to succeed semester after semester. We may not all have had the same experience, but we all have great results. ”
Associate Dean Altman then presented certificates to all participants.
