India lost a medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games after bronze medalist boxer Parveen Hooda went missing and was suspended for 22 months. Parveen won a bronze medal in the women's 57kg category at last year's Asian Games, which also earned her a spot at the Paris Olympics. However, the International Testing Agency (ITA), which is responsible for managing her performance, suspended her earlier this month after she failed to submit her whereabouts three times within 12 months.
“The ITA confirms that boxer Parveen Hooda has been suspended for 22 months, effective until 16 July 2025, for three instances of disappearance within a 12-month period as provided for in Article 2.4 of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Anti-Doping Rules (ADR)1,” an ITA statement said.
“In addition to the period of disqualification, the athlete's results obtained between December 11, 2022 and May 17, 2024 will also be disqualified,” the statement added.
The 2022 Asian Games were postponed by one year due to the coronavirus outbreak in China and were held from September 23 to October 8, 2023, but this period was within the stipulated period set by the ITA. As such, Parveen will be stripped of his bronze medal. .
This development means India's overall medal count in the 2023 Asian Games will drop from 107 to 106. However, it does not affect his compatriot's fourth place position in the overall medal rankings.
In an unprecedented embarrassment for Indian boxing, the country has been forced to relinquish its Olympic quota in the women's 57kg category. Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Jasmine Ramboria will compete for a spot in the 57kg category at the final Olympic qualifiers starting in Bangkok on Friday.
In boxing, quotas are given to countries rather than athletes.
