salt lake city — A key group of Olympic officials is scheduled to visit Salt Lake City next month as part of the final steps in Utah's bid to host the 2034 Olympics.
The Olympic Future Host Committee is made up of nine members from around the world and will be in Utah from April 9th to 13th. The committee will take a closer look at the Salt Lake convention proposal.
That means its job will be to recommend whether the International Olympic Committee decides to bid to Salt Lake.
The report is expected to be submitted in June ahead of a potential tender later this year. Today, members of the media were briefed on plans for the visit.
“Salt Lake City, Utah, has an experienced partner with great expertise, and the state of Utah has a well-managed venue with strong operational experience that will facilitate the planning and implementation of the Olympic Games. We know we are benefiting,” said Future Olympic Director Jacqueline Barrett. game organizers said.
Christophe Dubi, Director-General of the Olympic Games Secretariat, also joined in the call. He had a lot of positive things to say about Salt Lake's potential bid.
“The Olympics since 2002 have visited different countries and continents. They have all been very exciting. But returning to Salt Lake is certainly a great prospect,” he said at the beginning of the meeting.
The committee will tour several of the upcoming venues in Utah during its five-day visit to the state. These include urban venues that will be home to curling, ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating. You'll also visit the Olympic Village, Big Air Medal Plaza, International Press Center, and Main Press Center.
We also tour mountain venues for alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, biathlon, Nordic combined, and cross-country skiing.
What about the NHL and MLB's yet-to-be-built stadiums?
As Utah looks to reimagine downtown Salt Lake and attract professional sports teams to Utah, Olympic leaders have been asked if proposed NHL and MLB stadiums could be used as Olympic venues. Ta.
In other words, IOC leaders say it is possible if built, but is not included in the current bid.
“When it comes to elections, we want to keep an open mind for the future and make sure we have the right solutions for each sport in each area,” Barrett said.
Dubi was even more direct.
“If it makes sense for these venues to actually be built, we will be opportunistic and flexible, because they were built in the meantime, which is great. Organizing Committee If they can be used, even better. But let's not link investment in these venues to the need for the Olympics,” Dubi said.
What will life be like in 2034?
Looking more broadly, the committee will also be tasked with evaluating the legacy and sustainability of another Olympic Games to be held in Utah.
And when the committee visits, it will try to think from a long-term perspective. With the advent of AI technology, Barrett and Dubai said there is a need to assess what life and sport will look like in 2034.
“[Sports like hockey] “They’re going to be more athletic, faster and more technical,” he said.
“Right now, the global thing that affects sports and winter in particular is the climate. And we all have to look for solutions,” Dubi said.
Still, Olympic leaders expressed confidence Monday that the Salt Lake Games could be successful again.
“I really like this feeling, going back to some of the great experts they've ever had. They've been successful. They know their recipe,” Dubi said. said.
