Virginia has added a conference opponent to its schedule for upcoming nonconference football games.
On Wednesday morning, the Cavaliers announced they will play a nonleague home-and-home series against fellow ACC member North Carolina State. The Hoos and Wolfpack are scheduled to face each other in Raleigh on September 6, 2025, and again in Charlottesville on a to-be-determined date in 2026.
“Boo [Corrigan] UVa Athletic Director Carla Williams said during the ACC Spring Tournament in Amelia Island, Florida. “I thought it was great. It's a great rivalry. I want to play as many ACC games as I can. I have a lot of respect for him and the coach. [Dave Doeren] And their program, and it's reciprocal. ”
In those years, the two tilts between UVa and North Carolina State don't count toward the conference standings.
There is also precedent for league schools to play each other in non-conference games. In 2019 and 2021, the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest University played as non-ACC opponents, but those games did not count toward the ACC standings.

UVa and NC State were not scheduled to meet on the ACC schedule until 2027 due to the expansion of the ACC, which will incorporate the University of California, Stanford University and SMU into the league starting this fall.
It was too long for the Cavaliers and Wolfpack.
“The more we play each other, whether it's conference or non-conference, the better we get,” Williams said. …Let's do it again, preferably with others. ”
Williams said Cavaliers coach Tony Elliott and Doeren are also in attendance.
“The coaches were like, 'Oh, great,'” Williams said. “Anytime you get to play against other ACC teams it's great. It's great competition. It helps the conference and it's always really, really good. It helps the brand.”
The two schools have met 60 times since 1904, with all of the last 50 meetings occurring in ACC play.
When the conference was divided into divisions for regular season play from 2005 to 2022, UVa and North Carolina State faced each other just seven times.
The most recent fight was a down-to-the-wire finish at Scott Stadium in September of this year. The Wolfpack, with former Cavaliers quarterback Brennan Armstrong behind center, won 24-21 with Armstrong leading the final drive that ended with NC State's game-winning field goal as time expired.
In addition to the two nonconference games officially added Wednesday and the 2027 ACC schedule in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers and Wolfpack are also scheduled to meet in 2029 ACC action in Raleigh.
UVa's 2025 and 2026 nonconference schedules are both currently set.
In addition to the game against NC State, the Cavaliers will host games against Coastal Carolina (August 30), FCS William & Mary (September 13) and Washington State (September 27) in 2025. The following year, they will play against FCS Norfolk State (Sept. 12), Delaware State (Sept. 26) and Notre Dame (October 17).
On Wednesday, UVa announced home dates against FCS VMI for Nov. 23, 2030 and Nov. 20, 2032.
Earlier this week, the Daily Progress learned through a Freedom of Information Act request that the Hoos will open the 2028 season at Old Dominion in Norfolk.
