Last Saturday we watched the biggest heavyweight boxing match in the last 20 years. Oleksandr Usyk (22-0) takes on “Gypsy King” Tyson Fury (34-1-1) in Saudi Arabia to become the unified heavyweight champion.
Both men entered the match as world champions and were undefeated. When the boxing match first started, Usyk really came forward and landed some really good shots in the first round. However, Tyson Fury started to turn things around in the second fight.
Fury stepped forward further, combining body and head attacks perfectly. He wobbled Usyk several times with big uppercuts. By the second half of the boxing match, it felt like Fury was in complete control. But he let Usyk control the middle, forcing Usyk forward throughout the fight.
The much bigger Tyson Fury was against the ropes for most of the match, so I really think that hurt him. Usyk regained control of the game and took it to the 9th inning. Usyk rocked Fury hard with a left that nearly ended the fight in the ninth. Fury managed to survive and make the final three rounds very competitive, but ultimately it wasn't enough.
Fury thought he had done enough to win the boxing match, but the two judges disagreed. He went back and watched the fight again and found that he had gone six rounds for each fighter, but a drop in the ninth round was a one-point difference on the scorecard. I agreed with the judge who scored Oleksandr Usyk 114-113.
boxing rematch
Tyson Fury has always boxed his best when moving forward as a fighter. He uses his size to overwhelm his opponents, and then uses his size to try to tire them out. In this match with Usyk, he was on the back foot too much in the fight. Although he still achieved success, his best moments were marked by his aggression.
He needed to be a bull for this match, but he was happy being a bullfighter. Tyson Fury is such a great boxer that he still almost made it, but he wasn't boxing at his best. Both men are scheduled for an automatic rematch, which is expected to take place in October if both agree.
In that fight, Fury has to be the aggressor. No matter how great he is, I don't like him boxing on his back foot. If a rematch were to happen, I expect a more aggressive Tyson Fury to look to reclaim the heavyweight title.
