Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun suffered a severe ankle sprain and knee contusion, but avoided serious injury to his lower right foot, officials told ESPN on Monday.
After being carted off the court in the closing stages of Houston's win over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night, Sengun underwent postgame X-rays and an MRI on Monday, which revealed the injury required surgery. It turned out that this was not the case, the official said.
Sengun, 21, has not yet been ruled out missing the final month of the season, but officials said he would need to heal significantly to be cleared to play again before the regular season ends on April 14.
Sengun was one of the breakout players in the league this season and established himself as a cornerstone of the franchise.
Sengun, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is averaging 21 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5 assists while shooting 53% from the field. He is one of five players with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists this season, along with Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo, Dallas' Luka Doncic, Sacramento's Domantas Sabonis and Denver's Nikola Jokic. It's a person.
Sengun scored a career-high 45 points last week against the San Antonio Spurs, making him fifth all-time with 45 points, 15 rebounds and five steals in a game.
