CP3 'definitely open' to owning NBA, WNBA teams after retirement appeared first on NBC Sports Bay Area
As Chris Paul nears the end of his legendary playing career, the future Hall of Famer is already eyeing his next move: owning an NBA franchise.
During an interview with Forbes, Paul was asked about possible ownership of the Charlotte Hornets or an NBA expansion team.
“Charlotte is definitely at home, but I'm open,” Paul said (h/t Bleacher Report). “I'm definitely open to it, especially if there's expansion or anything like that. I've been around the league for a long time from all sides. I know the game, I understand the GM, player relations, all the different entities. That's definitely one of my goals. I want to own a team.”
Paul grew up in North Carolina, so becoming the Hornets' owner would be a dream come true for the 12-time All-Star point guard who has played the past 19 seasons in the NBA.
In the same interview, Paul expressed his excitement about the WNBA's rapid growth and said he would like to be a part of it.
“I've been going to WNBA games every year since I've been in the NBA,” Paul explained. “I'm excited [about the WNBA’s future]Because I do union work, so I go to their unions and talk about, “How can we grow their game, how can we do this or that?” They just did it organically.
“People are finally starting to understand how great their game is. They have a lot of talented women, so they play the game so smoothly. Everything is really exciting and effortless and I think it's going to continue to grow, and I want to be a part of that. I want to own a WNBA team.”
Paul signed with the Warriors a year ago, but his only season with Golden State was plagued by injuries and inconsistent play. Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy wants to keep the veteran point guard, but other teams have also expressed interest in the 39-year-old.
In addition to his interest in potentially owning a team in the future, Paul served as a basketball analyst on ESPN's “NBA Countdown” this postseason.
