Highland School District offers a unique summer internship for students who want to try their hand at technology.
Students in grades 8 through 11 will have the opportunity to tour the district's technology department in two separate sessions lasting approximately 10 days each.
Although the position is unpaid, Superintendent Monique Mawhinney said the goal is to eventually offer paid internships.
“This fits into our career and workforce readiness programs,” she said.
The CWR initiative spans all grade levels and exposes students to alternative pathways after high school, including trade and entry-level employment.
Jonathan Westergom, assistant director of IT, said the summer opportunity will give students hands-on experience working with staff in the technology department.
Students may be tasked with helping repair iPads and Chromebooks, or cleaning and cataloging the district's devices, he said.
Students should apply for internships as if they were jobs.
“It gives them experience and gets them used to it,” Westergom said.
Applicants will be selected through a brief interview following the application process.
The first session will be held from June 17th to 27th, and the second session from July 8th to 18th.
Students will work at the high school from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. Transportation will be provided.
