It's been nearly 18 months since Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze took over the reigns of the Tigers.
There was some good, as Auburn finished 10th in recruits for the Class of 2024, according to the 247Sports Composite, but there was also bad — the Tigers finished 2023 with a 6-7 record. Ta. But from an overall perspective, prominent booster and AU board member Jimmy Lane is happy with where the program is ahead of the Freeze's second season.
“I really like Hugh,” Lane said Thursday at a foundation dinner at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery. “I think he's a good guy, a good human being, a good coach. I think it's obvious to anyone who follows football that his team was better than the team that came before him. There's no reason to think he will be. I'm very happy for him and he's going to keep working and keep improving.”
Mr. Lane has served on the Auburn City Board of Trustees since 1999, representing District 3.
Founded in 2000, the Jimmy Lane Foundation has awarded scholarships to more than 700 students over the past 24 years. Thursday's banquet provided an opportunity for this year's award winners to be recognized.
“This is the biggest event we've ever had. Over 1,000 people are here tonight,” Lane said. “We raised over $2 million in one night and we are amazed at the level of interest.”
