The undisputed heavyweight showdown begins once again. Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night, with all four recognized heavyweight titles on the line. The fight was originally scheduled to take place in February, but Fury suffered an injury during training camp, which delayed the fight for three months. The team arrived in the Middle East ready to finally determine the true world's best heavyweight.
Both players overcame the horrors of the 2023 season to enter the match, with Usyk getting dropped by Daniel Dubois, but the referee ruled the shot a low blow, giving Usyk time to recover. He then stopped Dubois in the ninth round.
Fury found himself in an even tougher spot in October when his undefeated record barely survived a fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Ngannou did well enough to score a knockdown and win many rounds, but Fury ultimately won by split decision. Fury's title wasn't on the line, but in a fight he was expected to dominate, a loss would have been more embarrassing than just narrowly escaping with a win.
The undercard includes a pair of title fights, as well as some more interesting matchups that could result in a title challenger later this year. Jay Opetaia and Mairis Briedis will compete for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title. Both parties had previously met in July 2022, during which time they caused serious harm to each other. Additionally, Joe Cordina is looking to defend his IBF super featherweight title against Anthony Cacace. And heavyweights Frank Sanchez and Ajit Kabayel are scheduled to pitch.
