Members of the Virk Karate Club were one of 12 clubs competing in the Yorkton Abominable Snow Slam Open Martial Arts Tournament on Saturday, March 9th.
“We had 13 contestants and took home a total of 9 gold, 18 silver and 8 bronze trophies, including the infamous trophy won by Estevan club teacher Troy McClelland. It also includes the Power Breaking Trophy,” Robin Virk said. “Teacher has won first place in this wonderful event for the seventh year in a row, excluding the coronavirus!”
She said Vilcu's ranked third as a club in the tournament.
“We are extremely proud of all of our students at both Weyburn and Estevan,” she said. “We will continue to train hard for the 39th Virk International Martial Arts Championships, which will be held here in Weyburn on the 23rd in two weeks at the Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles Gym! We look forward to welcoming many clubs!” The United States, and perhaps other countries who have contacted us this year with interest in competing with us. ”
Virk added that as the club has grown over the past few years, it continues to seek sponsors through a newly introduced tiered system.
“The non-profit travel fund needs more support from the community to keep these kids participating in other tournaments not just locally, but within the state, as well as internationally and nationally.” Becoming a world champion is achievable and our sponsors will help make that dream a reality.”
